Happy New Year!
Here’s a great way to start your year:
If you own a heritage house (or building) in Vancouver, you may want to consider applying for a grant from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation for the exterior painting of your house or building. The VHF’s True Colours program allows owners of heritage houses to apply for up to $1500** in a cash grant + FREE PAINT from Benjamin Moore. **Larger cash grants in some cases.
Careful Painting painted the exterior of this Heritage House in Vancouver as part of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s ‘True Colours’ Grant program.
Vancouver Heritage House Painting done by Careful Painting as part of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s ‘True Colours’ Grant program.
The way the program works is that if your application is successful, a heritage consultant will attempt to determine the original colour scheme of each house or building. The paint schemes funded will be from the True Colours Palette or original to the building as per the consultant’s report. Benjamin Moore will provide free paint, which Careful Painting can properly and skilfully apply.
Careful Painting is an approved, official Benjamin Moore painter for the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and True Colours program, and has completed several projects for the program.
**Remember -The Deadline to Apply is this February 1st

Careful Painting is back working in Yaletown. We are painting the interior of this beautiful 2 floor, 1400 sq ft townhouse in Marinaside.
We are using Benjamin Moore paints. We’re using the Gennex ‘ultra flat’ ceiling paint on the ceilings, and ‘Aura’ satin on the doors & trim -both in ‘Snowfall White’ OC-118. The colours on the walls are ‘Revere Pewter’ HC-172 on the main walls, and ‘Edgecomb Gray’ HC-173 in the bathrooms and closets. We’re using ‘Aura’ matte on the living area walls, and ‘Aura Bath & Spa’ on the bathroom walls and ceilings.
Careful Painting painted the interior of this house in West Point Grey. We used Benjamin Moore’s ‘Aura’ paints. The colours are: ‘Oxford White’ on the walls, and ‘Ultra White’ on the ceilings & trim. Our customer loved the results.
A regular customer of ours called me this past Sunday. We had refinished his back deck and steps this past summer, and he wanted to know what he could do to prolong the finish. We still have a month of Fall left, followed by three months of winter, before an often wet Spring here inVancouver. It’s worth it for him to do a few proactive things to help the recent finish last as long as possible
I suggested a couple of things to him, which you can do too…
1) If possible remove everything from the tops of the railings, steps, and decking. Particularly pots and planters. The problem with pots and planters is that if they are left in the same spot for a prolonged period, they can often lead to wood rot. If they can’t be removed, then the next best option would be to place the pots on trays with wheels or coasters (so the planters can be moved about the deck easily and frequently) or getting some vinyl spacers or ‘pot toes’ to put between the bottom of the pot and the deck. These minimize the amount of surface area of the planter that actually comes in contact with the deck.
2) Keep leaves and needles off the surfaces, but more importantly, keep these out of the spaces between the boards on the deck. If these spaces become plogged or blocked, water can sit there for months at a time. It’s important to allow as much air as possible to circulate in these areas to prevent wood rot.
3) Keep the surfaces clean. Removing dirt and algae will not only make the finish look better, but it will prolong the life of the finish or stain. This is easily done with some mild household detergent and a soft brush on a pole. –if you power wash, use low pressure, and be very careful not to damage the wood.
Please have a look at our deck refinishing page for more information on Vancouver deck refinishing.
In an upcoming blog, I’ll write about a few other things that you can do around your home to help protect your exterior surfaces over the winter.
Thanks –and feel free to contact me about any questions that you may have, or if you would just like some free advice.

Careful Painting ~ Painting Vancouver Since 1995
Careful Painting is back in West Point Grey. We have done many painting projects in West Point Grey throughout the years. Here we are working for these long time and regular customers on the main floor of their house on W.6th Ave. We are changing the wall colours from Benjamin Moore’s ‘Ashley Gray’ to ‘Oxford White’. We are not repainting the ceilings (General Paint’s flat White ‘Breeze’) or the trim (Benjamin Moore’s ‘Ultra White’ Satin Alkyd). Both still look great 9 years after we painted them back in 2003.
